What’s Behind the 100-Meter Barrier?

According to commercial building cabling standards like ANSI/TIA-568 and ISO 11801, the maximum supported length for a Category 6 or 6A channel is 100 meters. This limitation is largely due to signal degradation caused by insertion loss—the further the signal travels, the weaker it becomes. For enterprise networks needing to power devices beyond this range, the 100-meter limit can be a real challenge.

Conventional Options for Extending the Network

To extend beyond the 100-meter barrier, enterprises typically consider several options:

• Adding More Telecommunications Rooms: This option increases space and cost demands, making it both expensive and invasive.
• Using PoE Extenders: While they can double the reach, PoE extenders often reduce power delivered to the device and are constrained by power and bandwidth limits.
• Switching to Fiber: Fiber optics remove distance restrictions but introduce higher complexity, cost, and the need for additional optical transmission equipment.
• Existing Extended Reach Cabling Solutions: Though these solutions claim extended reach, they come with conditions and limitations that make their reliability uncertain for many installations.

While these options offer potential solutions, they often come with significant costs or risks, prompting network managers to seek a more practical and reliable approach that extends both data and power over longer distances.

Introducing GigaREACH? XL

GigaREACH? XL is CommScope’s answer to the 100-meter barrier. It is the first extended reach Category 6 UTP solution capable of delivering:

• 1 Gbps/90 W up to 150 meters
• 100 Mbps/90 W up to 200 meters
• 10 Mbps/90 W up to 250 meters

• At the AXIS South Asia Pacific Partner Summit in June, we proudly showcased our GigaREACH? The camera displayed exceptional clarity over a distance of 250 meters, demonstrating the capabilities of GigaREACH? XL to support various PoE applications seamlessly. In line with the summit’s theme of collaboration, this solution leverages the trusted tools and practices used by our certified PartnerPRO? community and is backed by our SYSTIMAX Assurance? program for industry-leading reliability and quality.
• CommScope was also proud to host the latest AFCOM Brisbane chapter event, where Matias Peluffo , VP of APAC Enterprise, delivered an insightful presentation on "Preparing the Data Centre for AI from a Network Cabling Perspective." Matias highlighted the transformative impact AI will have on data centers, describing it as a "tsunami of change." He focused on three key challenges data centers will face in the AI era: power and cooling, bandwidth, and network densification. • We also participated in the 2024 Sydney Cloud and Datacenter Convention (CDC), connecting with valued customers and partners while meeting new ones. • On October 15, we hosted an exclusive AI Executive Event with NVIDIA in Singapore, bringing together top minds in AI and network technology.
