Elevate HER: Navigating Life Challenges and Triumphs

Welcome to the first edition of TalkWise, a weekly newsletter where I will share my thoughts on empowerment: a space for everyone to reflect on and unleash their potential in life. I will be talking about girlchild education, empowerment, Faith, Life, Women In Leadership, and being your authentic Self.

In Today’s episode, I will talk about helping the girl child elevate her potential.

Have the ways in which you were raised influenced you in any way? If yes, help me identify the obstacles that hinder African children from achieving their goals and aspirations. The podium is for everyone, especially for young girls who dream of reaching great heights. However, it has become increasingly difficult for African children, particularly girls, to progress and achieve their dreams. We need to redefine our strategies and overcome the fear that holds them from breaking the glass ceiling. Let’s discuss what impedes the progress of young girls in academics and fulfilling their passions. Is your child shy or timid? Perhaps you should reconsider how you nurture her at home.

Redefining Your Tactics?

Breaking the glass ceiling has become the gem for many women - we encourage young girls to go for ‘gold’ i.e. great! But have we considered how these girls can get there? Let’s get talking. What are some of the things that impede your girl child from doing so well in academics through doing what she loves? Is your child timid? Maybe you should reconsider how you nurture her at home. When you see a girl confidently holding a microphone free from stage fright, doesn’t it make you feel proud? Consider doing these instead:

  • ?Encourage your child to speak up at home and express herself on topics she loves, such as her favorite subject in school, sporting activities, hobbies, or anything of interest. Please don’t stop her because you think she sounds boring. Just allow the young kid to flow.
  • Invest in her talent. If she loves to read, allow her to watch the news, buy her favorite books, and listen to her read. Offer constructive feedback when necessary.?
  • Attend events and conferences together depending on the topic for discussion (Climate change, SDG goals, and other educative events). It will give her a grasp of what is happening around the world.?
  • Be her mentor! Work can be hectic but It shouldn’t avert you from attending to her.?

?Restructuring The Empowerment Cause?

African children are seen as timid due to fear and anxiety instilled by society, a guardian, or some family members. Can they achieve their dreams? Or do they need to overcome their fears first? If we talk about anxiety and fear, I know it happens to adults as well but sometimes these things start from your upbringing. Now, some organizations are donating books for girls to read. Shoes, clothes, and sanitary pads are no exception to facilitate access to education. Indeed these organizations are doing an incredible job. One I will commend is Inspire to Rise , a non-profit organization that provides resources to aid children in gaining their full capacity in Ghana.?

However, the empowerment movement in Africa should go beyond donations. Some girls are going through a lot (depending on their age range). Some require counseling, others need affection, empathy, and other forms of support. If scholarships and books are given to aid the work of young girls, they must be in the right state of mind to fully utilize the resources provided. If we can restructure the empowerment cause in Africa and identify what the girl child needs, empowerment will not wither.

To sum it up, women and girls are doing amazing things and I love it! Yes, women have taken up the cause and I’m thrilled by their accomplishments. If you want your girl child to be seen and heard, start implementing these few ideas and you will see a change.?
