Elevate the Discussion Before Call for Action!

Elevate the Discussion Before Call for Action!

Actions drive Outcomes; Without Actions there are no Outcomes. These are obvious and indisputable facts; but what drives actions? It's not just experience and knowledge but for so many situations where IT Leaders are put in (e.g. Transforming business applying newer technologies, Communicating the value you bring to the organization when you are a new hire, Empowering teams to bring the best from each other, etc), it is the combination of "human emotions, judgement, and collective ownership" that contribute to solid long lasting adaptive plans, attitudes, and partnerships that produce enduring outcomes.
Enduring outcomes here mean - even after you leave a company, the good you did will continue to generate positive business value to the organization and teams you supported.

How do you motivate and energize all the people you interact with (starting from top level executives to people who actually do the work) to stroke right human emotions, generate right judgement, and build collective ownership to produce enduring business outcomes?

What are we Elevating here? Peoples' state of mind, appreciation for each others' positions and ideas, mutual trust in partnerships and collaborations, patience/tolerance for each other, and organization's emotional capacity to neutralize business threats and constantly innovate to win in the market place.

Few concepts/values/behaviors that worked for me for elevating the discussions that we all have day-to-day at work:

1. Patience (to not to expect results right away and continue building "trust" with each and everyone you interact with even if that means sometimes people misunderstand between patience and weakness)
2. Tolerance (to respect diverse opinions and forgive yourself first and not being hard on yourself)
3. Humility (to be humble forever till you die irrespective of your knowledge and success)
4. Curiosity (to learn why people react the way they react and make the next conversation better than the one before)
5. Assertive (be confident but know the fine line between "bullying because of your power/role" versus "being respectfully assertive" to back your convictions without insulting others while moving things forward)
6.  Valuing People first; Projects and Results next (to value people's growth more than a project's success; "projects come and go while producing results", but if we replace "projects" with "people" in the prior phrase, we have a serious problem.  Invest in peoples' growth and freedom when a conflict arises to choose between "people" and "projects")

Few concepts/behaviors that did not work for me:

1. Power (because of the seniority or role in the organization)

2. Aggressiveness (because of constant pressure on all of us to deliver under the budget and before the timeline)

What worked for you? and What did not work for you? to elevate the discussion before calling for specific actions for implementation to produce positive enduring business outcomes?

This elevates our thoughts to reflect on the core of how we work. Thank you for creating such a simple yet profound article
