The elephant in the room

In this time where a relative few have control over the vast majority of the world's wealth, how can we protect ourselves from the groupthink of omnipresent and all pervasive propaganda generated by a few who want to protect and enhance their own power?
This question is very hard to answer for liberal democrats and others who value a free press. "Control" of any kind over the press is anathema to them; but how can the news media be truly free when all opinion comes from essentially the same source?
This battle over people's minds comes at a time when the world's wealth is controlled by an ever diminishing number of families; it is the struggle that will define humanity's future. But as long as the news media consist of business driven operations with bottom lines to meet, this struggle is destined to be won by those who have the money and incentive to win it. The unfortunate thing is these interests are not really interested in the "news" except as a convenient vehicle for advancing their agendas through conspiracy theories and propaganda. This is the problem the West needs to resolve--and the time for that is running out.
Should there be a Fox News in America? Tough question, but it seems to me this is the elephant in the room right now that no one knows how to address.
