THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Have you ever wondered if the shoes you wear daily are regulated for quality and safety? With new standards rolling out across the industry, India is now setting a benchmark through the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for its footwear sector, which went into effect on July 1, 2023. All footwear under this regulation will need to have the ISI mark on the footwear. This regulation isn’t just a formality – it brings real changes to what’s available on the shelves and the quality of footwear brands that Indians can trust. Covering essential categories like leather, rubber, children’s footwear, and athletic shoes (even those high-profile foreign brands), the BIS mandate aims to improve footwear quality across the board. Or will it?

Great move ! Shoe brands have had a very wide play ground when it comes to quality & compliance of testing statndards. However, it still remains to be seen as to how these rules will be implemented & how will the compliance adherence be monitored, regulated & enhanced. With 70% of the market covered with unorganised retailing, it will require a mammoth & milestone based focussed efforts to ensure adherence. With over 35 years of Organised apparel retail market, disclosing content on the Wash care by retailers in india is still a loop hole that even organised retailers misuse. However, well begun is half done. So, there is hope that we will be there one day.

This is interesting. Does this bring new testing guidelines for footwear imported or manufactured in India. Also for manufacturers are there any quality guidelines to be followed in factory.. Are there any certifications that the factory will need to manufacture to Import to India, who provides those certifications?
