Electroplating Update #1

For the original post, see here: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/adventures-electroplating-casten-riepling-twzwc/

I got a bigger tank and added an air pump to improve oxygenation.

You can see the copper sulfate solution has gotten pretty skungy.
The air pump with super fancy 3d printed flow regulator.

I also tried getting an inexpensive platinum plated grid anode to reduce anode degradation and sediment in the tank. The emphasis here is on "tried". Here is the "noble anode":

Not platinum plated, probably not even titanium plated.

It was much longer, but alas, succumbed to the digestive qualities of the plating solution. I'll either try a more expensive one or switch to graphite rods.

For this next plating, I used a larger model as a test, but it's not a final. But I was pretty happy with the results. It's fairly heavy. I'll have to weigh the PLA figure before and after plating to see how much copper mass has been added.

Here are the results:

Out of the bath, rinsed and dried off.
The other side. This side was intentionally out of the solution and suffered quite a bit of oxidation.
The same side after a little polishing.
The other side with the camera flash on in an effort to show the shininess.
The little guy's face after a skin care treatment with steel wool.

This was a trial model and won't be completed. But the results are largely satisfactory.
