OpenAI launches Sora: text to video AI ??

OpenAI has recently unveiled a new tool, dubbed Sora, which has the capability to generate videos directly from text prompts. The text prompt for the video below? 'The camera directly faces colourful buildings in Burano Italy. An adorable dalmatian looks through a window on a building on the ground floor'.

This groundbreaking model can produce realistic footage up to a minute in length, closely adhering to the user's directives regarding both the subject matter and style. Remarkably, Sora is not only capable of generating videos from scratch based on textual descriptions but also has the ability to create videos from still images or enhance existing footage with new material.

In a cautious approach to ensure responsible usage, OpenAI has granted access to Sora to a select group of researchers and video creators. These experts are tasked with "red teaming" the product, a process designed to assess its vulnerability to misuse or violation of OpenAI’s terms of service, which strictly prohibit the creation of content involving extreme violence, sexual content, hateful imagery, celebrity likenesses, or the intellectual property of others.

AI startup reinventing the electric motor raises £10m

Monumo is a British startup that blends advanced AI innovation with classical engineering acumen to reimagine the electric motor, and it has recently emerged from stealth mode.

The company's patented technology has led to the development of a deeptech-engineered design for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) that achieves a 50% reduction in torque ripple throughout the drive cycle, resulting in a motor that operates more smoothly and quietly. This innovative approach to SRMs, incorporating simulation, optimisation, and prototyping, signals the potential for broader adoption in various segments of the electric motors market.

Established in 2021 with bases in Cambridge and Coventry, Monumo is committed to advancing decarbonisation, initially targeting the global electric vehicle (EV) market anticipated to value at $623bn by 2024.

Is the UK EV market hitting a bump in the road?

Electronic Specifier's Harry Fowle talks with Ben Whitaker, Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer of Kerbo Charge, to learn more about the current UK EV market scenario.

On the backdrop of the House of Lords report on EV sales, which showed a 25% sales decrease in Jan 2024 compared to Jan 2023, one might be quick to assume that this is showing an alarming decline or a slump in the EV scene here in the UK, but is that really the case?

In reality, there are many factors that go into determining a statistic that on the face of things seems flat, and instead, the picture is more complex. Whitaker is actually a part of the camp which is seeing things in a more positive light.

Envisioning a future of brain-inspired AI hardware

Envisioning a future of brain-inspired AI hardwareArtificial Intelligence (AI) hardware is increasingly drawing inspiration from the human brain’s structure and how it functions.

This approach, which is often referred to as neuromorphic computing, aims to mimic the brain's efficient and parallel information processing capabilities. A notable milestone in this journey is IBM's NorthPole chip, which sets the stage for future explorations and developments in this field.

According to A. Mehonic and A.J. Kenyon from the 英国伦敦大学学院 ’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the future of brain-inspired computing will be a move towards systems that can process unstructured data, perform image recognition, classify noisy datasets, and underpin novel learning and inference systems. These neuromorphic systems will likely offer significant energy savings compared to conventional computing platforms, and while not aimed at replacing digital computation, they will complement precision calculations and could integrate with quantum computing in the future.

Series 14 – Episode 4 – Navigating the upcoming changes to EMC regulations

Paige West speaks with Dr. Guido Schlegelmilch , Head of Product, Schaffner is now part of TE Connectivity about the upcoming changes to the EMC regulations.

Founded in 1962, Schaffner has established itself as a global market leader in EMC filtering, boasting a revenue of approximately 160 million Swiss francs in the last fiscal year. With a commitment to innovation and quality, Schaffner operates worldwide, offering a broad range of standard and customised EMC solutions across various industries including energy management, automotive, medical, and data centres.

The conversation then shifted to the critical updates in EMC regulations, where Schlegelmilch explained the current framework aimed at ensuring electromagnetic compatibility. The regulations are crucial for maintaining the reliability and safety of electrical products. He highlighted the division of regulations into basic, generic, and product-specific standards, each serving to mitigate electromagnetic interference within their respective domains.
