Electronic Specifier’s pioneering Women in Tech and Engineering event

Electronic Specifier proudly hosted its first Women in Technology and Engineering event on the 2nd November 2023 at the prestigious Curve Club in London.

Overcoming the wrath posed by Storm Ciaran, the evening was a testament to the steadfast spirit of the attendees and their collective commitment to advancing the role of women in these vital industries.

The evening, which buzzed with discussions, networking, and valuable connections, was an intimate gathering, curated to provide a platform that would allow for engaging and meaningful dialogue on pressing topics.

Ama Frimpong, the celebrated Head of Development at 52 North Health, led the event with a keynote on professional resilience and personal fulfilment in the face of career challenges. Her esteemed accolade as the Young Woman Engineer of the Year by the IET underscores her pivotal role as an industry leader and a champion for women in technology and engineering.

A panel, curated by Paige West , unveiled the perspectives of tech leaders from diverse sectors who collectively addressed the importance of diversity in STEM and career versatility. The panellists, representing companies like Engineers Without Borders UK , Ricardo plc , Sky , and XP Power , were united in their commitment to fostering a more inclusive industry.

Will Rishi Sunak’s Summit stop us fearing AI?

Do we need to fear AI? This is one of many questions people are asking ahead of the UK AI Summit this week.

In the realm of electronics and technology, few topics have garnered as much attention in recent years as artificial intelligence. As it stands, this innovative field is ushering in a new era of possibilities, from automating mundane tasks to revolutionising industries. However, alongside the excitement and potential, there are growing concerns about its implications for society, security, and ethics.

What is artificial intelligence?

At its core, AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, particularly computer systems. These processes encompass learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using that information), reasoning (using the rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions), and self-correction.

There are two main types of AI: narrow or weak AI, and general or strong AI. Narrow AI is designed and trained for a specific task, such as voice assistants or image recognition systems. In contrast, general AI possesses the ability to outperform humans at nearly any cognitive task, though it remains largely theoretical at present.

Off-road solar car reaches the Sahara after 1,000km test drive

TU/e student team Solar Team Eindhoven has reached the end point of their 1,000km test drive, from northern Morocco to the Sahara, with the world's first off-road solar car Stella Terra.

In Morocco, the solar car travelled through dry riverbeds, forest area, along steep mountain trails and through the loose desert sand.

"It was an incredible trip with a positive ending. Stella Terra's efficiency was hard to predict. That's why we weren't sure if we would make it on solar power. During the ride, Stella Terra turned out to use 30% less energy than expected. We were able to drive the entire trip on the sun's energy and did not depend on charging stations," explains team manager Wisse Bos .

The solar energy for Stella Terra is collected by solar panels on the roof. With these solar panels and its robust construction, Stella Terra achieves complete independence in a sustainable manner, anywhere in the world.

Zero-emissions air travel in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland

Hybrid Air Vehicles Ltd has announced the results of a first of its kind concept study into the role of Airlander, the world’s most efficient large aircraft, finding that it can deliver cost-effective, low-emission passenger transport and freight to the Highland and Island communities in the North of Scotland.

The study was part funded by the UK Government through UKRI funding to the SATE (Sustainable Aviation Test Environment) project of which HAV is a partner.

The report was supported by AECOM, Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS), Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Orkney Islands Council (OIC) and Loganair who are all engaged stakeholders in the development and potential of Airlander and how it may operate in the region and offer new solutions to connectivity challenges.

The report highlights that AIRLANDER LIMITED could help to decarbonise regional travel, add freight capacity into the network and could also provide further economic growth through tourism. It also analyses the forecast dispatch availability given the imperative to maximise operations in the prevailing conditions with minimal delays.
