Hi and Welcome back to the Theory and Practice of Estimating Electro - Technology Projects.
In this LinkedIn Feature I want to share with you my thoughts and experiences regarding EV Charging Infrastructures??
You may not see too many electric cars on the road at the moment but Australians are really starting to think about them??
Recent research undertaken by the Electric Vehicle Council suggests more than 50% of Australians will consider an EV for their next vehicle?? ?
The same research indicates EV sales have increased about 150% year-on-year until the close of 2021???
Many Australians have already taken the dive on an electric car, with Tesla reaching 12,094 buyers last year???
To put that in perspective, that’s more cars than Lexus (9,290), Skoda (9,185), or Volvo (9,028) over the same period???
Total EVs sold last year was a relatively impressive 17,243 units and this is despite there being no emissions-based incentives or investment in the sector, at both federal and state levels, UNTIL RECENTLY??
You might also be surprised that range anxiety does not rank as the top concern among buyers???
In fact, the top reason is cost, with a recent EV Council report suggesting 87% of people consider purchase price the biggest disincentive when looking at an EV???
According to Property peak body Strata Community Association (SCA) with approximately 6 million strata residents across Australia,?and EVs estimated to represent up to 49% of total vehicle sales by 2030 and 100% by 2040 the report, the first of its kind, provides a clear illustration of the challenges facing the uptake of EV's and the potential impact on Public & Private electrical infrastructures across the nation??
With this prediction - the locations for charging stations will span beyond the traditional petrol stations to include homes, offices, council buildings, apartment complexes, shopping centres, aviation and maritime ports??
“Clean Car” government policies are being rolled out to help households save thousands on the upfront cost of an electric vehicle so this growth could be greater than that predicted??
Figure 2 below illustrates a typical Public & Private electrical infrastructure??
The operation of EV’s and chargers create significantly high consumption of energy from the Public and Private Networks??
The additional consumption of energy pose new challenges to both Public and Private Electrical Infrastructures to operate within their current carrying capacities??
As a result most consumers and businesses are not seeking to electrify all their parking spaces due to existing electrical infrastructure constraints??
AS/NZS 3000:2018 Appendix P1 provides " Guidance for Installation and Location of Electrical Vehicle Socket -?Outlets and Charging Stations"??
AS/NZS 3000:2018 Appendix P2 provides "Maximum Demand" guidance??
So before you race out and gear up to install Charging Stations all over the countryside, consider the infrastructure constraints first to avoid DNSP and Consumer disputes??♀???♂???♀???♂???
Other considerations are QEMM section 2, QECM Section 3 and switchboard capacity??
