For Electric Vehicle Motor Insulation, DK7-20H is the Productive Choice

The Automotive Industry is well known for being hyper-competitive. The challenge for any contender is to provide the industry with maximum productivity, at the lowest price, while still solving the problem at hand. With the ever increasing electrical and thermal demands of the automotive duty cycle, especially those of electric vehicles, the problem at hand is thermal durability.

SolEpoxy has met the challenge of thermal durability, high productivity, and low price with SolEpoxy?DK7-20H, the world's most productive and affordable Class H coating powder. The industry standard for certifying the dielectric strength of insulating materials under thermal stress is UL 1446 EIS. Receiving a Class H rating from UL indicates that the material can provide electrical insulation for 20,000 hours at a 180°C operating temperature. SolEpoxy? DK7-20H outperformed 2 leading Class H coating powders, in side-by-side testing, producing 12% more motor armatures per hour on the same electrostatic fluid bed coating lines.

?Unique Benefits of DK7-20H:

  • Best-in-class thermal durability with a UL 1446 Class H rating
  • Thermal Index of 186°C
  • Outstanding durability in the presence of automotive fluids
  • Outstanding thermal shock resistance – important for EV duty cycles
  • Rapid gel to enable highly productive manufacturing processes
  • Faster than the competition in a side-by-side production test on electrostatic motor coating lines.

Hairpin Motor Insulation

SolEpoxy?DK7-20H while designed for the slot insulation of traditional round wire style motors, has also been specified for insulating copper hairpins. Increasingly the Automotive Industry is looking to hairpin-style motors that provide more power than traditional round wire counterparts. Unlike round wire motors, hairpin motors use flat, rigid, pieces of copper inserted into the motor slots and welded together. The shape of the copper hairpins allows the motor slots to be filled to a greater degree creating more power than the same sized round wire wrapped motor.

After copper hairpin ends are welded, they must be re-insulated. SolEpoxy?DK7-20H is ideal due to its outstanding thermal and chemical durability.

After the copper hairpin ends are welded, they must be re-insulated. For this application, DK7-20H is typically applied to pre-heated hairpin ends dipped into a fluidized bed. The rapid gel characteristics of DK7-20H make it easy to optimize in high-throughput automated coating lines that utilize a final oven or induction curing step. DK7-20H boasts no VOCs, a more consistent coating, and minimal waste when compared to liquid epoxy systems. Combined with an excellent floor life, SolEpoxy?DK7-20H is the superior choice in Class H coatings.
