Electric cars: the future of the transportation

The new passenger plug-in cars that were registered in Europe during 2022, were a total of 183,900, which is 3% more than a year ago. That's about 19% of the total market, according to EV Volumes' data, shared by Jose Pontes.

A plug-in electric vehicle (PEV), also known as a new energy vehicle (NEV), and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car model, has become popular in recent years although its history dates back a long time ago.

Plug-in electric cars have several benefits compared to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. All-electric vehicles have lower operating and maintenance costs and produce little or no local air pollution.

In China, electric car sales nearly tripled in 2021 to 3.3 million, accounting for about half of the global total. Sales also grew strongly in Europe (increasing by 65% to 2.3 million)

Chinese electric cars are typically smaller than in other markets. Alongside lower manufacturing costs, this has significantly reduced the price gap with traditional cars.

EV and BEV: electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles in Europe

In 2020, the national new car registration increase in European countries has increased compared with 2019. The highest rates were found in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, and?the Netherlands.

Countries like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom accounted for about 60% of BEV registrations, with the numbers tripling compared with 2019. In Norway, BEVs accounted for 54% of new car sales in 2020, increasing from 30% in 2018. PHEV ( plug-in hybrids) sales were highest in Sweden (23%), Norway, and Iceland (20%), that’s means nearly one in four new car sales in Europe are plug-in electric.

In countries with the highest electric mobility, the government offers financial incentives such as tax reductions and exemptions for electric vehicles, designed to make the costs comparable to those of conventional vehicles. Other incentives, such as allowing the use of bus lanes, are also offered to the citizens.

The Mitsubishi Outlander P-HEV is the world's all-time best-selling plug-in hybrid, with global sales of around 300,000 units through January 2022.

?According to the International Energy Agency, electric car sales powered through 2021 and have remained strong so far in 2022, but ensuring future growth will demand greater efforts to diversify battery manufacturing and critical mineral supplies to reduce the risks of bottlenecks and price rises.
