Electives have come a long way from being a passtime relaxing subject, to being the core of learning. Even corporations who work hard for their human resource development can take a cue from this, and help people cross over through such learning and in the long run, find some great leaders besides the brownie points from their employees.
The students would look to learn the main technologies from Electives likes Artificial Intelligence, User Experience Design, Machine Learning, Blockchain, Graphic Design, Animation, Game Design, Game Development, Algorithm Design Storytelling/ Narratives etc.
Electives are courses that students can choose from a number of optional subjects or courses in a curriculum, as opposed to required courses which students must take. The concept of electives has been around for a long time, but it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when they were first introduced into curricula. Electives give students avenues for choice and can function as vehicles for core content standards.?
A well designed curriculum will have an elective stack(s) - electives that come together across semesters and allow students to specialize. For e.g. if you want the students to learn about games, then having a game design elective, followed by a level design or game programming elective and so on can lead to accumulation of enough knowledge to be a fit into the industry. Here is an examples of how it can lead to different user journeys for each learner.
The above Inforgraphic shows how SXILL.in creates unique user journeys through the curriculum.(image courtesy SXILL ?), thus ensuring 20 unique individuals for industry to find the right fit. This also creates interest in the industry to give back.

Corporations can also dig their heels inside a university ecosystem and spot and groom potential employees for themselves, besides doing CSR work in raising the future generation.
The trick however, lies in allowing the industry in, through the electives, so that the students are groomed by professionals, or professors of practice if you may.
I have designed and run an electives program at a leading university, where each school was asked to stack electives that can allow a fringe player to find an alternative vocation. Of course not all students would understand the purpose and would often flit from school to school, whereas intelligent ones chose a particular school of their liking and stuck to it, and thereby gained immense knowledge and insight into an alternative career, as well as build themselves for a career shift during the masters program.
If you need professional help designing electives, you can feel free to get in touch.
