Elections and Sense-Making

Elections and Sense-Making

One of the things that separates people from other animals is our need and ability to try and “make sense” of things.

Do dogs try and make sense of why leaves fall?

Do sharks try and make sense of why they eat certain types of fish?

I don’t know for a fact, but I don’t believe they do.

But humans…well, we are almost compelled to try and make sense of things.

National elections are great opportunities to see this in action.

Everyone is trying to figure out why what happened, happened.

But the reality, at least as far as I’m concerned, is that it will always be like the story of the blind men and the elephant.

At best, you’ll get part of the picture.

So, instead of trying to figure out the whole story from a part of the picture, the opportunity is to remove oneself entirely from the elephant and listen to how people are trying to make sense of it.

Not so that you can actually make sense of it. You’ll never talk to every single voter.

But what you can do is start to learn to hear the narratives.

You’ll learn to understand how narratives take shape and form and evolve over time.

I guess it’s about making sense around how people try to make sense of things.
