Election security, transfer of power and more

Get the latest Pew Research Center findings and everything you need to dive deeper into the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

With voting already underway in the 2024 presidential race, majorities of American voters are at least somewhat confident that the election will be run smoothly, that votes will be counted accurately and that ineligible voters will be prevented from casting ballots. But supporters of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have sharply different expectations for how this year’s election may unfold.

  • 90% of Harris supporters – compared with 57% of Trump supporters – say they are at least somewhat confident that elections across the U.S. will be administered well.
  • Harris supporters are more confident than Trump supporters that, after all the votes are counted, it will be clear who won (85% vs. 58%).
  • Harris supporters are also much more confident that mail-in ballots will be counted as voters intend (85% vs. 38%).
  • Explore how Harris and Trump voters differ over election security, vote counts and hacking concerns.

Harris supporters (61%) are nearly twice as likely as Trump supporters (32%) to say that, if their candidate loses next month, it is very important for them to acknowledge the opposing candidate as the legitimate president.

  • Views of the 2024 campaign are mostly negative. Just 19% of voters say the campaign makes them feel proud of the country, though that’s higher than the 12% who said this in July, with much of the change coming among Harris supporters.
  • More voters say Trump than Harris would be a “great” president (22% vs. 14%) or a “terrible” president (38% vs. 32%).
  • When it comes to the threat of political violence against political leaders and their families, Trump supporters (74%) are more likely than Harris supporters (60%) to view this as a major problem.
  • Dig in to views of the election and the candidates.
