On This Election Day — Committing to Be Builders

This is an email I sent today to our teams across our business-building and civic efforts.

Dear Teams,

With election day upon us, I want to share some reflections on what this moment means for Builders. We talk about Builders as flexible thinkers and constructive problem solvers who respect the dignity of all people. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, we cannot forget that 87% of Americans reject hateful absolutism and want to replace the forces that divide, destroy, and diminish with ones that unite, build, and bring light to the world. The majority of people want to be Builders.

We should also acknowledge that, regardless of which candidate wins, a large number of people will be outraged. Many Americans on both sides view the other party’s candidate as “evil”. This dynamic has already given way to heightened uncertainty, vitriol, and potential for violence (though, remember that support for violence in America is actually very low—around 3%). In this climate, we should all dig deep to maintain our commitment to the Four Cs of a Builder’s Mindset: Curiosity, Compassion, Creativity, and Courage. We must hold fast to our understanding that the endless cycle of polarization and hate ultimately hurts us all. We have to choose higher ground.

It is essential that we call for a fair election and peaceful transfer of power. Not only is this critical to upholding our democratic norms; it is also important for holding our elected representatives accountable. A party’s loss provides an occasion for introspection. The party is forced to regroup and determine where it went wrong, pointing it toward more constructive pathways for doing better by Americans in the future.?

Most importantly, we should double down on our efforts not just to be Builders ourselves but to also reward, and vote for, elected officials who are Builders. It’s my personal opinion that both major parties have become highly polarizing, frequently catering to the most extremist thinkers in their bases instead of prioritizing the majority of Americans. Both have engaged in tactics to divide us for partisan gain. We deserve better – and we must continue to demand better. Whatever your views, use your votes today (and always) to make your voice heard. At Builders, we will continue to build upon our programs like Citizen Solutions and Builders Power Rankings to propel the will of the people.?

I mean it with both gravity and hope when I say that the future of our country – and our world – lies in the hands of Builders. Our efforts are needed every day, and most of all, in times like these.
