An Election on 4th July: Anticipating Changes for MATs? A quick read...
Multi Academy Trust Association (MATA)
Collaborate. Network. Grow.
Whilst we are an organisation that typically focuses on the 'what is in my power as a MAT leader', it's hard to ignore such an important election for the Education space...
Members of the Multi Academy Trust Association (MATA) have already indicated in an early 2024 survey that they expect the Labour Party to form the new government.
Here is a breakdown of what we could expect from the expected switch to a new Labour government...
Increased Funding and Resources
One of the central promises of Labour's education policy is to boost funding across the board. This could mean, but not guarantee, significant financial injections for MATs, notable areas in need of funding remain facilities, teacher recruitment and retention, and enhanced student resources.
However, the question of growth is still very much up in the air - and we anticipate MATs will very much continue to write their own story on growth.
This will be discussed at the upcoming MAT Growth Conference 2024 in October here.
Enhanced Accountability and Ofsted Changes
Labour's focus on accountability could lead to more rigorous oversight of MATs. This may involve changes to frameworks to ensure that MATs are meeting educational standards and managing finances effectively, in particular within 'areas of opportunity'.
We are also hearing of changes in Ofsted's communication more recently, in particular, their post-inspection support to MAT and School leaders. This is following a deep analysis of their system and how they can work more collaboratively with education leaders.

Support is growing towards a system with Ofsted more similar to the Welsh system of 'report carding' which entails a more consistent dialogue throughout the year between Ofsted/MAT/School.
Further empowerment for teachers
Questions more recently have been raised to the current government surrounding improved working conditions and wellbeing for teachers. In the context of MATs, this could translate to more initiatives and packages in:
- Increasing flexible working packages for teaching staff
- Pilot programmes to continue and increase, relating to job sharing, flexible working, 'catch up days' etc.
Potential Restructuring of the MAT System
There has been speculation that Labour might seek to restructure the MAT system.
However, following our MAT Leaders Survey, this seems unlikely to be a reversal of the system towards LA power, given how far we are now down the road in the MAT system.
Thoughts...
As the election on the 4th of July approaches, many MATs stand at a potential turning point currently, with such a deviation of Trust stability across the board. The expectations of a Labour government, as indicated by MATA members, we hope brings a promise of much needed increases in funding.
Whilst none of the above are ever guaranteed, the majority of MAT leaders would agree they are absolute necessities for the betterment of the sector. MATs must stay informed and prepared to navigate these changes, leveraging the opportunities to foster an educational environment that benefits all students.
