eLearnSecurity's PTP course review
I have completed the PTP course and the eCPPT exam this week, and it was an amazing adventure. Last year, I did a CEH course and some basic CompTIA certifications, but this course / certification is not comparable to them. This certification requires much more knowledge than the previous certifications that I took in the past. However, I have to admit that I really liked PTP’s 100% hands-on approach.
Five months ago, I did not really understand how demanding this course was, and I planned to study 150 hours for it. Now, after six months and 750 hours of studying, (hopefully) I get my first valuable certification.
For the last 20 years, I attended over 50 IT related courses. None of these courses gave me such an amazing journey and I never learned so much.
For the next 6 to 9 months, I will study eLearnSecurity’s WAPT and PTX full-time. Most likely I will have to add another 1,000 hours for these courses before I feel ready to apply for a job in this field.
Many people see the great salaries in Cybersecurity and they quickly set it as their personal goal. I talked to a lot of people and a lot of them simply want to start this career without really thinking about what it takes. Unfortunately, probably less than 5 % of them will actually pass even the basic level of expertise to start this journey. My bachelor's degree in electrical engineering was also quite demanding, but not comparable to this field.
PTP (eCPPT) or the similar OSCP certification are great and teach you a lot about the basics of penetration testing. As a beginner, you have to invest about 500 hours to get one of these certifications. Be aware that this certification teaches you only the very basics.
At this moment, I feel overwhelmed by all the things that I still have to learn. I am really looking forward to it though.
Thank you for reading my article and all your support! Now, I am waiting for the eCPPT result.
