eLearning and Scrabble

My husband and I have recently taken to playing Scrabble at our cottage - it's a great way to do a little mental gymnastics while sitting out, enjoying the sunshine. It had been years since I played this game, having dug the familiar, tattered box out of a storage bin on a Sunday afternoon. 

And yet, as I patiently awaited my turn, I was struck by how a familiar feeling washed over me each time. It gave me pause to consider why, after a gap of at least 20 years, this would be the case...and then it occurred to me...particularly as I contemplated this mess of challenging letters. How to make a word out of A-E-E-E-N-N-N?

Playing Scrabble is a lot like designing an eLearning course as it turns out...at least the mental gymnastics that is required is similar. You start out with a mess of content (letters in this case) and you have to figure out how to build something brilliant out of it...something that will make sense to the learners and fit well into the existing learning landscape, while adding value to it at the same time.
