eLeader July 2024

I recently saw SIX The Musical. If you haven’t heard of it, this Tony Award winner is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of King Henry VIII. The queens each take turns to retell and ultimately reclaim their stories and their legacies.

Not to spoil it for you — it’s definitely worth seeing if you can — but this entertaining, powerhouse performance offers an important reminder that it’s never too late to define or re-envision your legacy.

As leaders, we work hard to build our reputation through career choices, job titles, work performance, and even how we give back and show up beyond the job itself. Over time, it becomes easier to just keep pursuing the natural path that continues what we’ve done or what we label ourselves as “good at doing.” (I’m an accountant so the next step is to get a promotion at my firm. I’ve been in the retail industry, so I need to stay in retail.)

But it’s never too late to chart a new path and redesign what we want our narrative to be. You have the power to change your career at any time. You can transform your reputation and ultimately decide the impact you want have. Be honest with yourself and lead with with values because no matter what has happened in the past, you can shape your future.

Even though these six queens faced challenges, traumas, and adversity, in the end, they chose to redefine their place in history. Through the power of agency, ownership, and personal responsibility, you have the ability to do the same! Now is always the right time to take control and make the changes that allow you live into your reputation as a trailblazer, influencer, thought leader, change-maker, or whatever you want your meaningful legacy to be.

What is important to you? What impact (large or small) do you want to make? How can you start more clearly representing who you want to be known as and what for? What will your legacy be?
