Elder Care and Dementia: Lessons from My Mother's Journey

Elder Care and Dementia: Lessons from My Mother's Journey

Reflecting on what would have been my mother's 91st birthday this past week, I feel compelled to share some insights about elder care and dementia – a journey that's both deeply personal and increasingly relevant to our society as our population ages and dementia cases increase.

My mother spent her final years in the memory care unit of an assisted living community, and watching her progression through dementia during COVID was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. The transition from independent living to assisted living to memory care brought difficult decisions: taking away her car keys, discovering theft by some caretakers, and learning she had fallen alone at home with no one aware. These challenges taught me crucial lessons about being proactive in care decisions, even when they're emotionally difficult.

Yet amidst these challenges, I also witnessed extraordinary dedication from many caregivers. I'll never forget the aide who stayed with my mother 24/7 during her time in rehab and through numerous hospital visits. Her unwavering compassion, dedication, and professionalism weren't just admirable – they were transformative. She brought dignity, comfort, and joy to my mother's final chapter, demonstrating the profound impact that exceptional caregivers can have on both patients and their families.

As our population ages, we're facing unprecedented challenges in elder care infrastructure. The growing number of people living with dementia in the coming decades will require not just more caregivers, but also better support systems for these essential workers who dedicate their lives to caring for our loved ones. Here are crucial lessons I learned that might help others navigating this challenging journey:

  1. Be Proactive in Care Management: Don't wait to act on signs of decline. In our case, having to take away my mother's car keys was heartbreaking, but necessary for her safety. Today's technology offers excellent monitoring solutions that can help facilitate earlier interventions. Companies like Norbert Health (which I am an investor), @currenthealth, and Biofourmis provide sophisticated vital monitoring systems. VitalTech and CarePredict offer wearables specifically designed for seniors, tracking everything from fall detection to daily activity patterns.
  2. Balance Security with Dignity: While many professional caregivers are exceptional, we learned the hard way that vulnerable seniors can be targets for theft. We wanted to preserve my mother's dignity by leaving her with her possessions, but this decision ultimately led to losses we could have prevented. Finding the right balance between security and independence is crucial.
  3. Partner with Care Providers: Even in premium care facilities, staying engaged with care staff about daily activities is essential. Work with caregivers to ensure your loved one maintains dignity and comfort in their daily routine, from personal hygiene to appropriate clothing. The best outcomes come from strong partnerships between families and care providers.
  4. Understand the Financial Landscape: Few people realize that assisted living rates are negotiable. Research market rates, understand what you can afford, and don't hesitate to have open discussions about payment options. There's often more flexibility than initially presented.
  5. Navigate Medicaid Strategically: Understanding Medicaid eligibility and patient rights is crucial. Research bed hold policies and facility requirements for Medicaid patients. This knowledge can be vital for long-term care planning.

I'm encouraged by innovations in this space. Companies like Sage Therapeutics and Altoida, Inc. are leveraging AI for early dementia detection and monitoring. Platforms like CareFull use AI to monitor financial transactions for elderly parents, while Rendever provides VR experiences for seniors with limited mobility. These technologies aren't replacing caregivers – they're empowering them to provide even better care.

Most importantly, I'm inspired by the countless professional caregivers who approach their work with dedication, empathy, and skill. While my family's journey included some difficult experiences, it also showed me the incredible impact of dedicated healthcare workers who choose this challenging but vital profession.

This is a challenge that touches many families, and sharing our experiences – both positive and cautionary – helps build awareness and drive innovation. As our society continues to age and dementia cases increase, we need more entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators focusing on elder care solutions – and we need to ensure these solutions support both patients and their caregivers.

What has been your experience with elder care? How can we better support the caregivers who do this essential work while ensuring our loved ones' safety and dignity? Let's continue this important conversation.

Thanks for putting this out there Caren Sinclair-Kay. Do you have any thoughts on which of the wearables are the smallest and least cumbersome? I bought my mom an Apple watch to detect falls and to motivate her to move more, but she refuses to wear it because "it's big and ugly."
