Our funder Kremena Stoyanova played a key role as a moderator in the Energy sector discussion at the third Powers Summit 2023 - an innovative platform for constructive dialogue among legislative and executive representatives.

The Energy panel included experts, government officials, and political party representatives who rallied around three key priorities:

  1. Precise the reform in the energy sector and the implementation of the market model till March 31, 2024.
  2. A roadmap development for full liberalization of the electricity market.
  3. Adherence to European regulations.

Minister of Energy Rumen Radev supported these priorities, emphasizing consumer protection in the market model introduction and the need for an explanatory campaign to that end.

Regarding the liberalization of the electricity market for household consumers, the panelists expressed various approaches and conditions, all linked to ensuring a well-functioning and predictable market:

  • A campaign to clarify liberalization and emphasize the importance of energy efficiency, advocated by Dr. Dimitar Beleliev from the Bulgarian Association of Electrical Engineering and Electronics.
  • Prioritization of strategic projects as public interests, as insisted upon by Ivan Mitev from the Bulgarian Chamber of Mining and Geology.
  • The need for energy storage and transmission, aligning with European regulations, underscored by Nikola Gazdov from the Association for Electricity Production, Storage, and Trade.

Energy experts also highlighted the importance of strategic projects related to renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. Meglena Rusenova from the Bulgarian Photovoltaic Association emphasized the increasing value of investments in renewable energy sources (RES), supporting the planned reform of the electricity market.
