EL Digest #26 — AI jokes don't work (yet)
Hey there world,
Time flies and we're almost at the end of March, folks. Good news first:?scientists are trying to extend the life span of pets dogs and their owners,?bad news: Congress is trying its best to ban TikTok despite the strongest opposition we've seen up to date with any social app ever: producing a lot of memes (and they're mostly actually very good, which is also kinda good news).
This month, we're giving you a tutorial on how to utilize Mapbox to make the best maps your project's ever seen and sharing yet another Webflow template with the world: this time a conference one.?
Have a blast,

ChatGPT's behind-the-scenes told by its creators (MIT Technology Review) When OpenAI launched ChatGPT, with zero fanfare, in late November 2022, the San Francisco–based artificial-intelligence company had few expectations. Certainly, nobody inside OpenAI was prepared for a viral mega-hit. The firm has been scrambling to catch up—and capitalize on its success—ever since.
TikTok US ban hearing is everything you think it is and showing how the Government is unequipped to standardize the industry (The Verge) The core concern is national security, namely that ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok could give the Chinese government a way to access personal data of the service’s 150 million US users. The federal government already bans its employees from installing the app on official devices, and it’s an increasingly similar story across state governments. There are also concerns that TikTok’s video recommendation algorithm could be used to promote China’s foreign policy goals.
Mid-March Silicon Valley Bank failed and was taken over by regulators. On Sunday, another bank, Signature Bank, was also closed. That day, the government stepped in to protect all of those banks’ deposits and create a way for other banks to get access to more cash.
Will it change your life? Probably not. But it's still interesting to look at.

Custom Maps in Web Applications Using Mapbox and Mapbox Studio by DAWID KIE?BASA, Frontend Developer
WHY:?Imagine you need some really cool and custom-looking maps for your project. Should you use Google Maps or Mapbox? Dawid, our Frontend Developer, had this exact question before him and he decided to go with Mapbox & Mapbox Studio. And now he's sharing his learnings so you don't have to learn on your own.?
WHAT:?Mapbox is a platform that deals with creation of tools for designing and creating maps for web/mobile applications using mostly OpenSource software such as OpenStreetMap. But what if we want to stand out from the competition, or we have a case where the client requires that the main color of the map should be blue and the?names of the cities be pink? Never know.
Mapbox developers created a special tool that allows you to create your own, perfectly fitting and standout map styles from scratch, called Mapbox Studio.
WHY:?Mapbox is often?considered to be more flexible. It has a huge number of tools, including the ability to create custom styles. The service also seems to be significantly cheaper and documentation is very developer-friendly. Read full story.
