Ekiti State: Nigeria’s Untapped Tourism Treasure

Ekiti State: Nigeria’s Untapped Tourism Treasure

Ekiti State, nestled in the heart of Nigeria, has long been a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Our state has remained in the background for too long, with its rolling hills, serene landscapes, and rich cultural heritage mainly unknown to the world. But as we take the significant step of inaugurating the Ekiti State Chapter of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, it's time to bring Ekiti’s untapped potential to the forefront of Nigeria's tourism industry.

When I was first approached about this initiative, I couldn’t help but think, “Finally! An opportunity to talk about something other than my favorite pounded yam joint in Ado-Ekiti!” But beyond my love for our local cuisine, this chapter represents the beginning of a new era for Ekiti—a chance to harness our state’s unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage and showcase it to the world.

Ekiti has always been like that friend who arrives fashionably late to the party but instantly becomes the center of attention. We have it all from majestic hills, waterfalls, warm and cold springs, pristine environments, and warm-hearted people. Yet, curiously, we’ve been somewhat shy about flaunting these treasures. That needs to change, and the time to change it is now.

Tourism isn’t just about breathtaking landscapes or ancient landmarks—though Ekiti has those in abundance. It’s about storytelling. It’s about sharing the magic of our everyday lives with the world. Take, for example, the charm of our famous hills. To outsiders, climbing them might seem like an odd pastime, but to us, it’s a spiritual journey, a connection to the land that is as deep as our history.

I recall a visitor who was so enamored with Ekiti’s culinary delights that she decided to take a cooking class to learn how to make pounded yam and rorowo soup. Unprepared for the strenuous task ahead, she ended up with sore arms for days but left with a newfound appreciation for the skill and tradition behind our food. It’s these kinds of experiences—both humorous and enlightening—that make tourism in Ekiti so special.

Another friend, a Lagosian accustomed to the relentless pace of city life, came to Ekiti expecting a quiet weekend getaway. By the end of his stay, he was already plotting his return, captivated by the tranquility and the feeling of being truly connected to nature. It’s a feeling becoming increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world, yet abundant here in Ekiti.

But beyond the anecdotes lies a deeper truth: tourism has the power to change perceptions, create lasting memories, and build bridges between cultures. The establishment of this chapter is more than just an organizational milestone—it’s an opportunity to put Ekiti on the global map as a must-visit destination. We have the potential to draw visitors from around the world who are seeking authentic experiences, and in doing so, we can uplift our local economy and preserve our cultural heritage.

I, too, have been captivated by the serene beauty of Ekiti’s landscape. Though I left in my teens searching for education, fulfillment, and prosperity, I returned less than a year ago, and I’m now convinced there’s no better place to live. Last March, I celebrated my birthday by bringing together a vibrant mix of local bards, musicians, performers, and age-old masquerades. My friends and family, some of whom are deeply entrenched in Western lifestyles, are still envious of the celebration—a testament to the unique cultural richness of Ekiti.

Our plans extend beyond merely promoting our state as a tourist destination. We’re gearing up to inaugurate a world-class museum in honor of the renowned carver, Olowe of Ise, a project that promises to attract art lovers and historians alike. Additionally, a group of music enthusiasts, both local and foreign, and I have started discussing the creation of a Museum of Drums. This museum will preserve and showcase drums from around the world, ensuring that this vital aspect of our cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.

Members of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, Ekiti State Chapter

Tourism in Ekiti is not just about economic development—it’s about preserving and sharing our identity with the world. Establishing the Ekiti State Chapter of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria is a crucial step in this journey. It’s time to stop being shy and start showing off what we have. We are putting Ekiti on the map as a premier destination for travelers who seek more than just a vacation—they seek an experience that resonates with the soul.

So, here’s to the future of tourism in Ekiti State. Let’s embrace the adventures we’ll share, the stories we’ll tell, and the laughter we’ll spread across every corner of this beautiful land. With determination and collaboration, we can make Ekiti not just the pride of Nigeria’s tourism but a beacon of cultural preservation and natural beauty for the world to admire.

This tourism piece about Ekiti is quite informative and grabs my attention because I have a tourism video project called "WhereHaveYouBeenInAfrica?" I am working on. The project is an innovative initiative designed to archive and promote Africa’s rich and diverse travel destinations, with a particular focus on Nigeria through video documentaries. This project aims to create an engaging digital archive of Africa’s most historically significant and culturally vibrant tourist sites by capturing video interviews with a range of professionals and documenting various iconic locations. I would appreciate conducting an interview with you, sir, about tourism in Ekiti and I welcome any support you offer to make the tourism video project a success.
