Eight weeks later! Being in a traineeship
Hello Augusta,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about my Global Experience here at Go Mammoth in London. I am actually in my seventh week in my internship, and I enjoy every day of it.
What made you decide to intern abroad and why GE?
I am a globetrotter, I traveled a lot around the world, but I never thought of accounting my trips into my resume. I decided to figure out a way to be able to travel, discover new places, culture and be able to add that experience in my professional competencies. Here came out my decision to either study abroad or intern abroad. I was already in my MBA program. Therefore, the study abroad was not relevant to me. I decided to go for an internship. But where to intern? It was my most difficult question to answer. I firstly decided to go for Sydney through Global experience. I was unfortunately unqualified for the Working holidays. I had to change my mind, and I was indecisive between Dublin and London. My best friend and my niece were not okay with Dublin. Then, based on my niece insistence I decided to go to London. She assured me that this was the right city for me based on my taste and my personality. They were right about London. I love it!
Was there a moment that you knew this program would change your life?
When I arrived in London from Dubai, I was jet-lagged for few days. I was wondering if I made the right choice and so on the kind of questions you ask yourself in such situation while relocating. I was not feeling well I was not used to the public transportation yet, and I doubted if the place will be okay for me and also how my workplace is and the amount of work, etc. I am also working on my MBA online as a full time, and it was a lot to cover. I had my first day at the office the next Monday morning. ON the way to work, I got lost, and I had to call the office to get help to reach the office. I had to jump into the work because no one was waiting for me. I was aware that being an intern is a significant challenge. I signed for it aware of the challenging problem. Every week there is on Monday morning a big meeting where we deal with all departments. The main topics were the failures to fix, the new projects and the objectives how to implement them or modify them such kind of things. I was really into my program from that time being. I went to talk to that departments in need to fulfill their objectives and offer my help to them. Whether, it was in sales or networking and also review surveys and auditing to help fix issues where they exist. Auditing the whole country surveys help me better understand the geography and the counties which were new to me. And learn about different cities in London as well. Obviously, the first day was the one.
What were you doing for your internship?
I have been helping all departments for the first week even if I was attached to the fitness staff. I was detached to work with the management and had to deal with the auditing, creating new surveys and also working on legal and safety policies. I was proactive enough to network for the company and also post sales events. For example, the article was viewed in four weeks by 30 persons and also drag three clients that booked the holiday event to Tignes. What made me highlight this task is that I was not recruited for the sales, but I was happy to help, and also quantify through metrics how well I could do in a city that I do not know well after a month. I also highlighted the potential target market I mean the expatriates available to the company and was not taken into account before my arrival. I am happy to think that somehow I had a positive impact and will have a beautiful recommendation letter.
Ah, Ha Moment- Powerful Memory?
Tough question! I would say it was when I visited Stonehenge with my niece who said that I should go to London. She brought me my Winter clothes from Germany and spent few days with me in London. I was happy to see her after a long time and to visit Stonehenge with her. It was wonderful! It will be a memorable souvenir. Amanda, my local advisor, was able to get her a ticket at last minute while I was not expecting it anymore. The guide was fantastic and was able to keep me focus on her explanations and all recommendations. My niece also enjoyed it a lot. She was considering joining the Global Experience.
How did you grow as a person/ professional?
I came here to evaluate my skills and competencies abroad through my internship. I am Happy to see that I can fit in an unknown country, a new company, and a new team. I am grateful to Go Mammoth for the particular occasion and the opportunity to test myself. Thanks to this experience I feel ready to work anywhere without feeling stressed or under competent. I was able to survive the unknown country while working online my last classes of MBA and I am about to graduate in four weeks while interning. I was able to achieve all my goals and have the chance to network enough while in London. I had set my SMART goals at the beginning of the program, and I feel like I have achieved all my goals. I do not regret my decision, and if I had to do it again, I would do without any hesitation.
I was also able to apply my Gallup skills toward my internship. The fact that I knew myself and the SMART goals allowed me to grow and quantify how well I am doing and follow the right track with my personal and professional growth. Thanks to James Austin for his patience, support and welcoming touch! He was mentoring me since my very first day. Thanks to his help I learned how to circulate, and go around in the city, and research the best way to navigate in London. After two months, I would not have been to do all I had accomplished if he was not here for me since the very first day at the office.
What would you say to other students?
I will advise joining the program. In either way If you like it or not you will grow up and learn a lot from yourself and from others in the location you choose to intern. The fact that you will far away from your comfort zone, friends, habits. Will allow you more room to discover your abilities and test yourself. See if the field you choose to work in fit your expectations. You will join a wider community of intern at the Global experience. You have all the necessary thing to be successful. Be proactive and participate. Do not sit down, and wait for the work to come to you. Make it happen and keep trying never stop trying.
My tips and recommendations would be to be proactive, keep yourself busy. The wait could be devastating, don’t let it got you and stayed focus. I would say follow "your why" and learn by doing. Prioritize and manage your time on a daily basis and avoid to disturb when you can simply send an email and let know that you send an email, instead of disturbing for a longer time your colleagues or supervisors.
Thank you!
