The Eight Habits of Highly Effective Leaders

The Eight Habits of Highly Effective Leaders

Just about a century ago, management expert Mary Parker Follett wrote that "Management is the art of getting things done through people."

I have been standing on her shoulders for over 40 years as I have trained leaders in many many organizations.

So, what goes into that "art" as she calls it. While entire textbooks have been written, I like to say that there are eight power skills for leaders who are getting things done through others. Here they are, four for getting results, and four for working well with people. Then, there is Number Nine, so read to the end.

GETTING RESULTS

Setting goals: Goals bring the future you desire into focus.

Accountability: Holding yourself (and then others) to account, ensures that commitments are kept.

Delegation: Learning to delegate not only helps manage your workload, it also can develop the capabilities of others.

Managing time: Time is one of your most precious resources. Not only is it true that time is money. Time is life too. Don't waste it.

THROUGH PEOPLE

Handling conflict: Whenever people come together, there will be differences. Conflict is inevitable. It can also be destructive, unless you know how to handle it.

Building teamwork: Bringing people together around common goals can lead to synergies.

Engaging: Are you leading people through change? People will support what they help to create. Involving people is the key.

Coaching: Coaching is not something added to a leader's role. Coaching IS the heart of the job description.

NUMBER NINE

The ninth power skill, a skill that underlines all of the other eight, is to the ability to effectively communicate.

As you can see, there is much more to say about each one of these.

If you are intrigued and would like to bring this message to your organization, let me know. I will be bringing this training program to three organizations shortly, I'd be happy to customize it to yours.
