Is EHR stifling Innovation in Your Organisation?

Health executives commonly cite the implementation of EHR as the foundation towards a digitised organisation but there are, in fact, mixed perceptions of the opportunity cost that EHR brings.

In the latest Top of Mind 2019 report, it was found that many health executives felt they were “locked in” by their EHR system. The survey revealed that more than one-third of respondents believed the use of a major EHR system had stifled innovation in their organisation.

This issue was particularly appalling when a major EHR vendor was involved as their systems were commonly of a “closed” nature that did not integrate well with other systems, according to the survey result.

The finding highlighted the urgency to achieve a good degree of interoperability both within and between health organisations. It also reflects the sentiments and desire of a substantial number of health executives to unshackle from the confine of EHR systems that are hostile towards interoperability and breath innovation and new life into the new digital health industry.

It is important for buyers with the aim of achieving sustainable healthcare to ensure that specifications always require large EHR to be open to other best of breed solutions and to specify the costs of such integrations before choosing a vendor.

Great read and addresses the fears/doubts of being "forever locked " in the EMR that one chooses for their hospital or organization.
