Egypt Showcases a Golden Parade of Ancient Mummies

Fit for the likes of Cleopatra and Ramesses II, present-day Egypt just had a dazzling and opulent display of 22 mummies in the streets of Cairo. The spectacular parade showcased some of the most significant mummies of ancient Egypt as they are being moved from the Egyptian Museum to the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The new resting place is located in the southern part of the capital.

With pomp and circumstance, the 18 pharaohs and 4 other royals were hoisted onto trucks decorated in spectacular gold wings and intricate designs. The trucks were designed in the shape of barges. Loaded into climate-controlled cases, the majority of the mummies are from the New Kingdom period between 1539 B.C.E. to 1075 B.C.E.. Among the pharaohs included the great king Ramses II and Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s only woman pharaoh. The mummies were buried about 3,000 years ago in the Valley of Kings and were excavated in the 19th century.

Part of the parade spectacle included Egyptian celebrities and personalities as well as guards on horses.

Visitors can expect most of the mummies to be on display at the new museum.
