Egis design bridges with style! Episode 3

Episode 3: Large style bridges

Steel became an essential material in the construction industry thanks to its exceptional characteristics and modularity. The bridge department of Egis masters both concrete structures and the large steel structures. The example of the Goutte Vignole viaduct and the Grand Canal du Havre viaduct.

Goute Vignole viaduct

The Goutte Vignole viaduct is a 618-meters long highway bridge supporting 2x2 traffic lanes over a width of 21.60 meters. It includes 7 concrete hollow piers supported on shallow footings. The 8 spans are composed by a composite structure, whose steel beams are 3.60 meters high. Designed by Egis, it is part of the A89 highway managed by ASF since 2012.

Grand Canal du Havre viaduct

The Grand Canal du Havre viaduct is also a highway bridge. It has been built by Egis teams between 1991 and 1995. The 1,500 meters of the viaduct are made up of more than 10,000 tons of steel framework and about 30,000 m3?of concrete. The 180-meter orthotropic metal central span is located above the river, providing a navigational clearance of 50 meters. Weighing 1,400 tons, it was brought by boat and hoisted using winches and cables. The height allows to avoid the use of a movable bridge, which would have been much more expensive and more difficult to construct.
