Eggs-tra, Eggs-tra read all about it...
Today’s issue is all about Eggs. Deviled Eggs to be specific. This delicacy is a staple at pot lucks, family gatherings and church homecomings. Civilization has been eating them since the days of ancient Rome. It’s become one of my favorite menu items at several local eateries. We’re going to highlight 3 from different establishments.
First, is the Deviled Eggs from Plum. Plum opened during the pandemic and has built a loyal following. Owner Lisa Callaghan and Chef Trent Shank have created an atmosphere that's fun and playful. Their menu features a seasonal rotation of fresh ingredients and there are a few staples to the menu, including these deviled eggs. What I love about their deviled eggs is the almost pimento cheese flavor of the filling and the crispy shallots on top. It’s way more than a mouthful but I accept this challenge. This is a dish my wife and I won’t split.
Next, Stoney River Steakhouse in Chapel Hill is a modern steakhouse that serves delicious food. If you’re looking for a big hunk of meat that’s cooked very well, this is your place. They also serve deviled eggs! Their eggs remind me of a burger. I know that sounds weird but hear me out. The filling has a mayo & mustard flavor paired with bits of pickle, maybe gherkins, and topped off with bacon. It’s delightful. They also serve them on the steak salad which is big enough to split between 2 people.
Last but certainly not least, is Mateo Tapas. They don’t just serve a deviled egg, it’s a huevos diablo LOL. This Spanish style tapas bar has a huge selection of small plates that rotate with the seasons. There are larger dishes available including Paella which could feed an army, it’s huge. Back to the huevos. Mateo’s deviled eggs are a pair of perfection served with a chorizo outer layer, scotch egg style. It’s warm, it’s eggy, it’s meaty. It’s so good. This is another place that G and I won’t share this dish. We order it every single time we go.
There are a lot of other really great places in the community that I failed to mention. If you have a favorite place that serves deviled eggs, we’d love to hear about it.?

OK, each of those looks amazing. A chorizo Scotch egg is such a brilliant idea. Shout out to Bricktops in Nashville for their deviled eggs topped with a huge piece of candied bacon!
Agree with you on Stoney River. Tandem in Carrboro has some with crab that are really good, too.
