The Egg Seller - A Lesson.

This Weeks Feature Article

Is a story about a poor Egg Seller which was recently shared and I believe deserves repeating... this is a lesson that resonates in business as well as personally...

A woman asked, "How much are you selling the eggs for?

The old seller replied: “50 cents an egg, ma'am."

She said, "I'll take six eggs for $2.50… take it or leave it."

The old seller replied, "Come, take them for the price you want to pay... it may be that this is a good start, because I have not been able to sell a single egg today."

She took the eggs and walked away feeling proud that she had bested the old man… that she had won.

She got into her fancy, expensive car and went to an elegant restaurant with her friend.

There, she and her friend, ordered whatever they wanted.

They ate a little and left a lot of what they asked for. When she went to pay the bill, it was $400.00. She gave $500.00 and said to the restaurant owner to keep the change.

The question I have is:

  • Why do we always have a need to show that we have power when we buy from the poor and needy?
  • And why are we so generous with those who don't even need our generosity?

I once read somewhere that my father used to buy simple goods from poor people, even if he didn't need them.

Sometimes he used to pay more for them…

I was worried about what my father was doing and once asked him why he did what he did?

My father simply replied,?"It is a gift of charity wrapped in dignity, my son."

Something for all of us to think about as we go through our day... "allowing someone a little dignity cost us very little, and can give another person an uplifting gift to their day..." :-)

Quote of the Week

“We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty.” — Mother Theresa

(Love is necessary for a healthy life. We think to live a healthy life, just like food and water. I practice daily by loving everyone around me.)

Thanks, Leo Petrik. I love the quote and the story. Sadly at the moment I keep coming across older men who are feeling unloved, uncared for who are really struggling. It is so important to take the time to listen and help them and everyone feel special.
