Egg prices are dropping -at last

Welcome to The Money, where we break down financial news and provide the TL;DR version of how decisions by the Federal Reserve, government and companies impact you.

Well - finally. After months of sky-high prices, the average cost of a dozen grade A large eggs dipped 32% between January and April, according to data from?the Bureau of Labor Statistics?(BLS). Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported this week that grocery executives predict the retail price for eggs will return to historic averages in the next several months.

The price change comes in the wake of last year's avian influenza, which made eggs more expensive but whose impact is beginning to fade.

"There are now more hens and more eggs on the market. That is, supply has increased, and prices have normalized," University of California, Davis agricultural economics professor?Daniel Sumner?said in an email to USA TODAY.

Cheaper groceries may slightly ease the coming sticker shock as student loan borrowers start repaying their debt again.

Tens of millions of federal student debt holders haven’t had to think about saving for or paying off their loans for more than three years. But in the wake of the?debt ceiling deal?reached by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week, millions of former students will see their student loan payments - and accrual of interest on those loans - restart as early as late August.

The Biden administration agreed that it wouldn't ask for yet another pause, sticking to its November decision that payments would restart either 60 days after the?Supreme Court?issues a decision on a proposed debt relief program, or 60 days after?June 30?– whichever?came first.?Without a Supreme Court ruling before June 30, payments restart and interest begins adding up again, on Aug. 29.?

The repayment pause is separate from a Biden plan that would forgive an estimated $400 billion in student loan debt,?a much-debated proposal being reviewed by the Supreme Court.
