EGAT opens Mae Moh 2 Substation, digital substation with smart technologies to enhance power security of country

EGAT elevated the power system with the opening of “Mae Moh 2 Substation,” the first digital substation in the North, to respond to the increasing renewable energy with smart innovations and technologies as well as reduce maintenance costs, space usage, and power generation cost.

On July 26, 2023, Mr. Chumlak Kanpetch, Deputy Governor of Lampang Province, and Mr. Kitti Petchsanthad, Deputy Governor – Transmission System of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), attended the opening ceremony of “Mae Moh 2 Substation,” the first digital substation in the North, at Mae Moh Sub-district, Mae Moh District, Lampang Province.

Mr. Chumlak Kanpetch, Deputy Governor of Lampang Province, stated that it is a pleasure that Mae Moh 2 Substation enhances the power system security and responds to the increasing power consumption of the North and Lampang Province due to the continuous expansion of businesses and tourism and the development projects such as Bang Pa-in – Chiang Mai Motorway No. 5, Chiang Mai – Bangkok High-speed Train, and Phahonyothin Elevated Highway. Moreover, it supports the development of Mae Moh District in Lampang Province to become a livable low-carbon city with advanced innovations and increasing power generation and consumption from renewable energy in the future.

Mr. Kitti Petchsanthad, EGAT Deputy Governor – Transmission System, added that Mae Moh 2 Substation is a part of EGAT Grid Modernization to respond to the increasing power generation from renewable energy during the energy transition from fossil fuel to clean energy in line with the national energy plan, driving the country toward Carbon Neutrality in 2050.

The 115 kV Mae Moh 2 Substation, one of the four pilot improved substations to be digital substations, was completed in May 2023. Installed with smart digital electronic control equipment to transmit light signal through fiber optic, the project helps reduce the usage of copper wire; the costs of control system improvement, supply loss prevention, and maintenance; and the space usage of the control center building and switchyard. In the long run, it will contribute to the lower generation cost, reducing the public burden.

Recently, EGAT has completed the improvement of three digital substations which are Trat, Satun, and Kantharalak Substations and planned to improved other substations nationwide to be digital substations within 2037.
