Overview

evpointuk ( EG Group ) launched the UK’s first dedicated HGV Charging Facility at the M61 Southbound Rivington Services as well as EV chargers on the Northbound side of the service station. Their main challenge was to get a HV supply to the Northbound side as the supply was brought to site on the Southbound side.

Solution

We sourced a company to carry out a directional drill under the M61 to allow a HV cable to be pulled over to the Northbound site. This included geotechnical surveys, bore hole testing, highways drain surveys before and after the drill, drill pits excavated to exact X and Y co-ordinates, highways TM to close the hard shoulder and slow lane either side of the motorway, and finally, to organise and mobilise a directional drilling outfit.

The project manager, Zakir Hasan , was kept updated throughout the works and was delighted that everything went well and was kept on schedule. Even though we had a large scope of works (installing two 2MVA substations and two boundary RMU substations including HV and LV cable installation) and had a major directional drill to organise using several different companies, we still managed to beat the DNO timescales for their reinforcement works.

Outcome

Carrying out this directional drill meant that a separate application was not required to obtain a separate supply from the existing network on the Northbound side. This dramatically reduced costs and timeframes for the client. The directional drill was carried out efficiently, and in one night, causing minimal disturbance to the client, customers at the service station, and highway traffic. The drill was completed and ducting pulled in by 4am and Serconnect staff then had the HV cable pulled in and terminated the following day meaning site would be ready to energise, this also reduced timescales for the client and allowed us to carry out all reinstatement works in the same week to benefit clients customers.
