Efforts Towards Green Sustainability

From the escalating energy demands of data centres to global warming, these consequences are both widespread and complex. The imminent threat of global temperatures rising by 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next two decades, as warned by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has cast a shadow over our sustainability efforts.

Rakuten's Sustainable Initiatives

In recent years, Rakuten has taken noteworthy strides towards environmental sustainability in Japan, actively contributing to the transition to renewable energy sources. Through service provided by Rakuten Energy, we have been at the forefront of promoting the adoption of renewable electricity.

Additionally, we have participated in "Project R100", an initiative that brings together the world’s most influential businesses committed to 100% renewable power. We targeted to power Rakuten Ichiba merchants and Rakuten Travel hotels with 100% renewable energy , extending the benefits of clean power to business partners. We eventually successfully transitioned to 100% renewable electricity at offices, data centres and fulfilment centres in 2021, setting a significant precedent for sustainable business practices.

Sustainable Tech Repurpose Program

Here at Rakuten Asia, we had recently unveiled an innovative initiative designed to empower its employees and contribute to the broader community. The Rakuten Asia Tech Repurpose Program is a unique endeavour offering employees the opportunity to acquire high-quality, refurbished IT equipment at a nominal fee. This initiative not only equips individuals for personal and professional endeavours but also champions environmental responsibility.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

In our office space, we have introduced dedicated recycling corners at the entrances of the office. These recycling corners offer employees and visitors a convenient and accessible avenue for the proper disposal of items made from various materials, including paper, plastic, batteries, and general waste. Rakuten Asia's dedication to sustainable practices within the workplace extends beyond its operational boundaries, setting an example for others to follow, and fostering a sense of collective responsibility for our planet's well-being.
