Efforts made by the President Buhari administration to reduce poverty in Nigeria

It is universally acknowledged that protecting the welfare and well-being of the governed is the primary responsibility of any government to the given.

The concept's creators intended for the governed to periodically delegate leadership responsibilities to select members of society, who would then ensure the promotion of their (the governed's) well-being through policy actions and programs tailored to achieve this goal.

The world over, the progress of any administration is estimated generally on how these standards have been set up, subsequently, any administration that bombs on this essential obligation has been considered a disappointment and will be seen as lacking authenticity to lead.

Nigeria is a large democracy governed by a well-crafted constitution that includes the issue of the welfare of the people as a component unit, so it cannot be an exception to the norm. The country is also a prominent and respected member of the global community.

The current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has decided that addressing the widespread poverty in the country is appropriate in light of its responsibilities to the people. By ensuring that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry, he has demonstrated the determination of his government to significantly reduce the alarming poverty rate in the country.

The establishment of a full-fledged ministry known as the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to meet the basic requirements of those who could be considered poor and vulnerable members of society is a credit to the government led by Muhammadu Buhari. In addition, Buhari has ensured the establishment of the ministry-based National Social Investment Program (NSIP).

There is no doubt that poverty is widespread throughout the nation and that previous governments have not adequately and coherently addressed the issue. The best efforts have been made on an ad hoc basis, and they have not adequately addressed the problem. With NSIP's arrival, all of these things changed. After the initial successes and effects, many of the various programs and schemes rarely last.

Specifically, NSIP is a youth-focused program created to intervene by collaborating with relevant government agencies to provide and engage youth in productive engagements with the ultimate goal of quelling the agitation in that democracy and restoring peace.

The program began in 2016 as an agency under the vice president's supervision. With the establishment of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, and Disaster Management, the agency now has a new supervisory authority independent of the busy vice president's office.

N-Power, which aims to provide youths with skills through training, is one of four clusters that NSIP is implementing to fulfil its mandate. Through this initiative, the government trains graduates and unemployed school dropouts in a variety of occupations so that they can find work. Additionally, these graduates work for a period of time in various organizations and institutions.

They receive stipends as a temporary measure until they find permanent, paid employment.

The second goal of the program is to place unemployed young professionals in organizations that need their skills for a while providing them with stipends from the government. This plan, like the N-Power initiative, is a temporary solution for these young people to use government-provided platforms to find permanent employment.

The goal is to ensure that the beneficiaries take advantage of the platform's opportunities to not only survive on their own but also search for long-term employment.

Additionally, the workplace normally chooses adolescents in the nation to participate in cultivating by becoming expansion specialist organizations to ranchers by showing them new cultivating procedures and techniques, which will perpetually build creation and yield.

The National Home-Grown School Feeding Program, the second program run by NSIP, aims to address issues in the educational sector, particularly those related to the high number of school-age children not attending school.

More specifically, the program's goal is to feed students while they are in school, which will help increase enrollment. The decision to continue the program is related to the country's high poverty rate, which means that many parents are unable to pay for food or send their children to school.

The government chose a school feeding arrangement to close the gap, providing young students with opportunities to eat in schools at least once per day. The number of students enrolled in schools across the nation increased as a result. The objective also wanted to make sure that young students would pay attention, which would lead to a higher quality of work from graduates of schools.

The plan also aims to boost the local economy of rural areas by involving cooks who buy their supplies from nearby farmers, who ultimately provide the necessary inputs.

The Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program (GEEP) is the third initiative. Its goal is to give youths loans without interest or collateral so they can start any business they want. Youths are eligible to receive grants ranging from N50,000 to N100,000 as part of this program, which includes schemes such as Trader Money and Farmer Money. With these grants, they can put their business ideas into action.

The final initiative is the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), in which a comprehensive database of vulnerable and poor Nigerians is compiled with the intention of providing Nigerians with monthly stipends to mitigate the effects of poverty on poor households throughout the nation. In its efforts to capture poor households, NSIP relies on the support and cooperation of community leaders in the area.
