Efforts to cap your coffees
As more and more restaurants offer to-go options, I really enjoy the design and ingenuity shown by many of the packages.
The following are some examples of design efforts I spotted during my own purchase of coffees.
Starbuck:
This is one of the first cup caps that triggered my interest in the design of packages.
The many ups-and-downs in the lower cap invite me to think about the relationship between package and user enjoyment and safety--this is for lip fitting and that is for air passage.
The tear-off piece on the top part guarantees user hygiene. However, it might not be strong enough if you want to carry it around.
It also might not be production- and cost-friendly due to the two-piece design.
Pizza hut:
Since hot drinks are only appendages to its food, you can see the design is less elaborate and more simplified.
You can also see the two-piece cap is more transportation-oriented. Elegance in drinking is not their target.
Burger king:
I think this is an evolved design to the Starbucks one. It covers air passage and anti-dripping with its upper part.
It also improves production and cost efficiency with its one-piece design.
However, the lip fitting curvature does not exist on this cap, or it might be difficult due to the material chosen.
This is my take of coffee cup cap design, in addition to the daily dose.
