Efficient Workflow in 21st Century Newsrooms
3.31.19 Jim Ocon
While cleaning out my old hard drives, I came across a sort of "primer" I had written up and shared with my boss, Bob Prather at the time who is now President and CEO of Heartland Media llc. (Thanks Bob!)
What strikes me...especially as I prepare my research ahead of the NAB 2019 convention over ten years later, is HOW MUCH of the ideas and concepts introduced in 2007/8 have accelerated beyond industry expectations.
When I wrote this in July 2008 shortly after taking the technology reins for the Gray Television Group (at the time around 56 stations) I was drawing upon a unique build experience while I was acting as Deputy Director, Engineering Pappas Telecasting under Dale Scherbing whom I was very lucky to be working for. At the time, the owner wanted to relocate 2 TV stations with local news to a shopping mall with an all glass approach.
The concepts laid out and lessons learned led to a complete redesign of studio production control automation as it relates to live news. I would be willing to bet that many of the ideas highlighted as a meaningful approach have now morphed into the large booths we visit in the 2019 era.
As a final note, I will be conducting floor walks Monday April 8 and Wednesday April 10. If you are at all interested in tagging along or have questions you need help with during the show please text or call 719-505-2817 or checkout my new website: oconcompany.com
Enjoy the ten year old "mission statement" Would love your reaction.
Warm Regards
