Efficient, Engaging, & Accessible: Building Effective Fitness into the Workplace

By Dr. Pam Denton and Hillary Welles

?As an HR professional or business leader, you know you need a comprehensive package for employee wellness – but now what? How do you address your employees’ health on all levels – mental, emotional, and physical? Is there such a thing as one-stop shopping? And if you do find the program, how do you get your employees engaged enough to actually stick to it?

The Band-Aid approach of wellness fairs and seeking out random unrelated programs is outdated. Instead of choosing arbitrary programs and then trying to build employee participation, what if you started by building camaraderie and community through a comprehensive fitness program that has a built-in support system? Employees would encourage each other and feel supported in their fitness practice – and have fun engaging in the activity together. This sense of enjoyment and fulfillment would then expand out into the work environment to increase overall employee satisfaction and productivity.

Good examples of group workouts building camaraderie in the workplace are the military and sports teams. Uniformed Services University puts it this way (See full article here: https://www.hprc-online.org/physical-fitness/training-performance/group-workouts-boost-team-camaraderie):

“Working out with a group can make it easier to hold team members and yourself accountable for staying in shape and sticking to an exercise program. Be it through team sports or just going to the gym as a group, the support system of group exercise helps keep everyone invested in meeting their fitness goals. But did you know that group workouts also can help build tight bonds between teammates? Here’s how.

Camaraderie?is the feeling mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. Trust between unit members is essential to completing the mission, which is why the military goes through great lengths to build unit cohesion. So, how exactly does working out together build camaraderie?

Particularly with team sports, camaraderie is built through things that make your team successful such as group cooperation and social support. Cooperation is crucial for any group or team activity….Teammates who trust each other work better together.”

So you get it about camaraderie – but how do you go about building this feeling of mutual trust and friendship into your team, especially when they have different fitness levels, abilities, and experiences?

Start with our SuperCORE BreatheFit program! Everyone has to breathe, right? So a program focused on breathing can appeal even to those who are resistant to working out. BreatheFit is the fastest and most efficient path to stress release, increased energy, and community building. Even the Navy SEALs build team morale by breathing together! They use a technique called “tactical breathing” for their teams going into stressful situations, otherwise known as “box breathing,” which is one of the breathing techniques we use in BreatheFit.

Why BreatheFit? Because it is:

·??????Accessible – Even though we use advanced breathing techniques, we introduce them at a pace that works for everyone. And everyone can understand how important it is to breathe – especially in these times of masks and shallow stress breathing.

·??????Efficient – The BreatheFit program is designed to scientifically energize the body, release stress, and build endurance in 15-minute to half-hour sessions. It can accomplish more in less time than traditional workouts that do not focus on breathing.

·??????Engaging – The program’s focused breathing engages participants in their own process of achieving health and well-being through motivational coaching, using the imagination pathway to stimulate healthy choices, and releasing built-up tension and stress.

·??????Team-Building – Participants will naturally begin to support and encourage each other, since the experience of breathing together naturally inspires connectivity and collaboration.

Don’t be fooled - BreatheFit is not a passive breathing experience. It incorporates physical and energetic moves that strengthen and intensify the results of the breathing practice. BreatheFit delivers an immediate sense of achievement and satisfaction. It is the gateway to the sustainable health and fitness collaborative that you want to build into the fabric of your workforce. And it’s a perfect place to start building camaraderie in the workplace. The team that breathes together, thrives together!
