Sustaining balance is an essential component of a harmonious existence; if you're too heavily weighted by work responsibility, both your personal and professional lives stand to suffer the consequences. In support of my topic “The Effects of Work & Life Imbalance” I would like to quote Former CEO of COCA COLA Mr Bryan Dyson
"Imagine Life as a game in which you are juggling some 5 balls in the air. They are work, family, health, friends and spirit and you are keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand work is a rubber ball; if you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls- family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these; they will be marked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for it."
Today every person wants to have a lovely family with adorable kids, great job that pays a handsome salary, drive a luxury car, own a beautiful house - basically live life king size. But is this actually possible? If yes, at what cost? Couples are struggling to make their dreams come true, they are practically running here and there confused. I am not saying everyone is running madly in the rat race…there are some who know what they want in life and how to go achieve it. Research proves that people are spending more and more time doing office related tasks even at home and recreation with the family is becoming less and less. With the advent of technology, everyone is using smart phones.. When employees receive it from work, they feel happy they possess one but do not realise that they are trapped 24*7!!
Its not the same anymore, when people would come home after work at 6 or 7 and then be with their families completely – helping kids do their home work, play board games, have family meetings at the dinner table or just have a normal family time. Now both men and women want to make big in their respective careers, prove their point and as a result kids are ignored. Divorce rates are on the rise as couples have no time for one another, they are practically married to their jobs. Both husband and wife are becoming more impatient, stressed, having stupid arguments and even develop bad health issues. 29 y old girl doesn’t want to go back to her 1y old marriage as she finds it difficult to cope both office and household work. 12y old Julie & 7y old Tom call their dad – "weekend papa" as they never really see him during weekdays.
When George failed in his exams, his parents were very angry, “how could you do this? We hired the best tutor for you. We bought the most expensive video games for you”. “But mum dad I never asked for that, I wanted you, you were never there for me.” They were speechless... 32y old Jay wants to be a house husband in order to take care of his daughter but is stressed about society..what will people say? Its very sad as the world is progressing, we are not progressing in our relationships, its becoming thinner and weaker.
We need to strike a good balance between home and family, we need to spend more quality time with our kids, teach them strong values, we need to learn from our past experiences to improve our present situation for a promising future.
“Value has a value only if its value is valued”
