Does your team understand the difference between effectiveness and efficiency??
During a training need analysis I facilitated last month in an organization, I asked all managers the difference between these two commonly used words, and to my surprise, only one out of 28 managers was able to tell the difference accurately.
Just prior to asking that question, all the managers in this organization were complaining about their teams being ineffective so I tried to understand what their definition of effectiveness was.
After that conversation, I couldn’t help but wonder how many employees in other organizations are evaluated based on a wrong interpretation.
“So what is the difference?” Someone might be wondering.
Effectiveness in simple terms is doing the right thing, for example, meeting certain process objectives or delivering the required output and outcomes while efficiency, on the other hand, is doing the thing right, for example, minimizing resources or time needed to complete a certain process.
Now that you not only know the difference but also understand it, would you make good by re-evaluating your team in case it was wrongly done?
Or would you simply bury that and continue evaluating them based on a wrong interpretation?
The problem with the second option is like creating a community of people based on a false personality because when they eventually come to the understanding that it is fake, they will leave.

Do you ever wonder why it is said that employees leave bad bosses and not companies?
I’m glad that the managers in the said organization made good and chose to re-evaluate their subordinates as they should be based on the right information and I also requested their subordinates to evaluate them.
When I looked at the 360° assessment for the managers from their subordinates yesterday, there was at least a 40% improvement as compared to the past years.
Talk about small steps having a huge impact!
Being right all the time has never been a requirement of leadership, and the people we lead are aware of that. When you make a mistake as a leader, there is enough room for correcting it.
Is your team’s training plan for 2023 ready? If not, I will help you have it completed if we start working on it now.
