Effective Priority Management at the Workplace
In the early days of my career, I spent over 10 hours a day at the office, working hard alongside socializing with colleagues quite frequently. This extended my office hours significantly. This is a common practice for us Indians. However, after getting married, I realized my responsibilities at home and needed to optimize my office hours without sacrificing fun, productivity, or efficiency at work. Initially, I struggled and sought advice on time management from senior colleagues, whom we Bengalis call 'Dada.' I implemented some of their advice, and a few strategies worked wonders for me. Later, I learned that these approaches had fancy names! In this post, I'd like to share some of the insights I applied in my life and achieved success with.

1-3-5 Method
The 1-3-5 method is a productivity technique that helps you prioritize and tackle your tasks. It involves creating a to-do list with three sections: one big task, three medium tasks, and five small tasks. This approach ensures you focus on the most important project while making progress on smaller ones that can easily get pushed aside. By limiting your list to nine items, you avoid feeling overwhelmed and achieve a sense of accomplishment by checking things off throughout the day.
Focus on task quantity and distribution throughout the day/week as follows:
?? 1 Big Task: The most important and challenging task of the day, allocate ~1 hour.
?? 3 Medium Tasks: Moderately important tasks that might take roughly 30 minutes.
?? 5 Small Tasks: Quick and easy tasks that can be completed in 10-15 minutes each.

Now, let's understand the difference and correlation between both approaches. The 1-3-5 method defines a specific task quantity and timeframe, while the Eisenhower Matrix focuses on task categorization and prioritization. If you struggle with task overload, try the 1-3-5 method. When you find yourself constantly pulled in different directions by urgent tasks, use the Eisenhower Matrix for effective prioritization.
