Effective Management Development: A Checklist

Effective Management Development: A Checklist

Professional development opportunities for managers will be most effective if:

1. The focus is on the real issues and challenges they face on the job.

2. Managers are able to work together to develop solutions.

3. Managers are able to share their knowledge and experience.

4. The content is provided in the context of the company policies and culture.

5. Learning and working are integrated.

6. The impact of company context and culture on the actions and decisions available to

managers are recognized.

7. The program is highly participatory.

8. Managers are enabled and expected to apply what they are learning throughout the

program.

9. There are learning activities that check for comprehension and application, so both the

instructor and the managers can see and assess their progress.

10. Sufficient time is provided to practice what the managers have learned.

11. Managers are expected to complete an action plan to apply specific new learning.

12. There is an established understanding that the managers will share their action plans

with upper management.

13. A post-class practice or application period is built into the program.

14. Managers have an opportunity to reflect on their practice experience.

15. Managers who attend the program quickly evidence more effective management

behaviors and decisions.
