What is the most effective leadership style?

What is the most effective leadership style?

I’ve recently completed my four years at University studying a Business degree, and in my final year, one of the modules focus was on leadership in practice. My submission portfolio was based around my own leadership journey and to assess what I need to do in order to become a successful leader today and in the future.

From my initial research for the portfolio the concluding information suggested that today there are external growing forces of globalisation, innovative technology and change in demographics, that create ambiguous business environments which results in predicting the future more challenging.

There are many styles of leadership with the main research focus being on transactional, transformational, and charismatic leadership, (Sajjadi, 2014). Several theorists found that ‘transformational leadership is increasingly relevant today as it has a focus on the followers’ development and motivations, and treating talents individually. This was evident from when we saw many presentations from different leaders about their own journey, whereby they all presented themselves with the ‘idealised consideration’ aspect of Avolio et al (1991) model of transformational leadership.

The overall conclusion from the research I found was that successful leaders must develop new approaches due to demand for change to sustain growth within the 21st century. Today, leaders must have high character and at least make effective decisions, have an inspiring vision, be trustworthy, empathetic, influential and lastly be self-aware.

I’m looking to hear from all levels of professionals…

What leadership style works best for you? What leadership style would you say you possess? Do you have any glowing examples of managers that have been exceptional leaders and has influenced the leader you are today? Or do you have any examples of when you’ve experienced poor management that has resulted in bad circumstances?
