Effective Conflict Resolution Strategies in the Workplace

1. Open Communication

The first resolution of conflict is communication. Ask your team members to open their minds, thoughts, and feelings. Therefore, active listening is fundamental because you have to listen without interrupting each other.

2. Calmness and Professionalism

There should be control over emotions; rather, they should be kept calm. The presentation before the confrontational party should not be personally attacked.

3. Focus on the Issue, Not the Person

Talk about the problem, not the person. This tends to prevent defensiveness and keeps a constructive conversation open. Try to use "I" statements--for example, "I feel concerned about… instead of "You always…").

4. Seek Common Goals

Identify common goals or interests where everyone can agree. Building on what is desired by all parties, it will be simpler to work together for a solution.

5. Brainstorm Solutions Together

Encourage all parties to contribute their ideas that might help resolve the conflict. Collaborative brainstorming may lead to creative solutions that everyone will like and thus more acceptable on.

6. Involve a Neutral Third Party

If the conflict can't be solved by either side, then determine if there is a necessity for involving a neutral third party, for example, the supervisor or HR representative.

7. Follow Up

After agreement, follow up closely on all concerned parties and ensure that the solution proposed works well and that relations are improving. Checking in shows care for their emotions and staying power to ensure a smooth working place.
