EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO CAREER UP-LEVEL

We need to be intentional about how we communicate effectively.

Effective Communication: Why?

 A. Helps you to grow both in and out of the workplace:

Helps to translate your intensions and feelings into easily understandable messages.

B. Makes you a more productive worker

Reduces miscommunication – mistakes

C. Improves your collaboration and team membership skills

Helps you to understand more what others are saying and they understand you too.


SEVEN IMPORTANT SKILLS TO ACHIEVE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:

  1. Pay close attention to what is being said and make others feel heard and considered.

2. Clear communication starts with active listening

If you only focus on the way you are expressing yourself, you may not be listening to what others are saying and will not get the information you need to act on.

3. Nonverbal Communication: (Body language, voice tone, etc.)

Be aware of your body language. Improving your nonverbal cues will improve your messaging and presentation.

Using positive body language can help show people you are sincere, attentive, and trustworthy. People like to work with others who they know, like and trust. Try to send the right message on first contact. 

A. Create a better first impression: First impressions are lasting and they matter. Someone’s first impression of you can stay with them forever.

B.  Excel at job interviews: Body language helps you to build rapport with the interviewer. You become more relaxed, likeable, and interested, which better improves your chances.

 C. Elevate performance reviews:  Your body language should reflect your emotions and words with poise. Whether you are assessing your own performance or that of others be intentional about your body language because either party could leave the conversation confused by your message and intentions.

4.  Manage your emotions

Allowing strong emotions to unnecessarily creep into a professional setting can lead to poor communication and conflict.

Protect your mental health by managing your emotions and express them appropriately within context. Sometimes we “get into our feelings about things” and don’t allow for objectivity.

5.  Develop a filter:

Effective communicators generally have highly developed social skills and can modulate how they express their thoughts and feelings to their audience.

You have an inside voice and an outside voice. Do not let your inside voice take over. It is not every thought that needs to be said or expressed.

Know what is appropriate to express in different interpersonal contexts.

Developing a filter will help you maintain a certain level of decorum and avoid conflict in the workplace.

6. Practice public speaking:

Public speaking sounds scary but we do it every day. A good place to practice public speaking is by using a social media audio app such as clubhouse and wisdom audio where you can speak without being on camera.

Regularly speaking in front of a group will magnify your strengths and weaknesses and force you to develop great communication habits.

7. Ask for feedback:

There is no shame in asking for honest feedback on your communication skills from colleagues.

Asking your peers or subordinates for their advice on improving your communication skills can help you better understand the message you send in your work environment and forge better relationships with them.
