EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION LESSENS ADVERSITY

This began as a tweet for my followers on Twitter. But I wanted to share a little more detail.
At one company I was leading, over a 2-year period, I met with every #employee in my line (around 280). I spent 30 minutes with each and learned a lot. But more importantly, I earned their #respect by listening & following up on the discoveries. #leadership
Every person that exists on this earth is imperfect. From the Chairman of the Board to the new employee starting in an entry level job, we have insecurities, ideas and value.
There is a myth that still persists that if you get to close to people you can not lead them. Well it may be that way for some. But effective leaders understand that impactful communication (listening & speaking) does not mean friendship but inspires and influences ideas, synergy and productivity.
- I have seen this quote a lot and I believe in it, "Too many listen to reply and not to understand". Take time to listen and question (do not challenge) when you do not understand. They know you are listening. In addition, follow-up or refer to appropriate people with an email on key points of value.
- Proactive communication is valued in that it anticipates challenges and is less stressful.
- Be concise. There is a ton of information available daily thru emails, meetings, calls and interactions. Highlight the key points quickly and offer availability for clarification or follow-up.
- Ensure your communication is clear. Body language and words can be confused based on other culture and experiences.
- Encourage your managers to spend time proactively communicating with feedback.
- Meetings should not be a social hour or a rambling exhibit of power. Instead pertinent communication that could or should not be distributed by mass email.
Time is an investment. When directed to the right resources provides a good return. As leaders we provide the vision and influence our teams. Yet the team must first trust that your vision is viable and you have integrity. It will prevent, not all but many challenges that new initiatives, change management or growth incurs.

6 年Thank you Sir! For such insight. A Leader can't communicate and influence his/her followers in the right direction without being a good listener.

6 年You met with approximately 280 employees for about 30 mins.? And followed up on their discoveries? One of the benefits I derive from individuals sharing on LinkedIn is getting to the 'how' successful initiatives are executed. Thanks for sharing on how you connected and gained your team's respect.
