Effective Communication Is Challenging!!
Recently I had a situation where I was dealing with someone professionally and this individual completed a task, but they completed it in a way that I did not expect. I mentioned to the individual what I was thinking and ended the conversation with "it's fine that you did it the way you did".
In my mind I was thinking I should explain my "it's fine" response, but I didn't. Well the individual took it upon themselves to change it according to "my initial expectations". This was a slight shock, but looking back I should have known this individual would have changed it. I asked the individual "was my message unclear about it being 'fine' the way they did it?" and they said "Yes, based on dealing with previous managers who were passive aggressive he picked up a behavior" to allow success in a challenging environment. Woooooowwwwwwwww!! The individual further elaborated on his interpretation of "fine" as "I don't need you to change it but I would like it changed"
A computer performs these functions, input, process, output, and storage and our minds perform the same functions. We can send an input to someone as effectively as we can, but that message is still has to be processed. Everyone processes things differently based on 1)biases 2)experiences & 3) perception.
In this situation I got an "output" that was completely unexpected!!!
Communication can be challenging!!!!
Clarity is key
