I've always been fond of that Oscar Wilde quote in addition to the Dr. Seuss quote at the top. I believe to be the most effective you can be on LinkedIn you have to be true to yourself. If you try to "fake it" and be something you are not, it will come across as uncomfortable and perhaps even worse... insincere.

Here's a two minute video that I hope shows what I mean about being yourself. Thanks to Gillian Whiney for your video marketing talents and creating this intro!

Show Your True Colors

So how do you SHOW your network your true self? I believe you have to come right out and say what you stand for to your network. And, one primary way to do that is state your principles for ALL to see. With that in mind, here are four of my top principles:

Number 1 - I Will Thank You for Interacting

If you endorse me for my skills, if you write me a recommendation, if you actually join the conversation or share my Posts, Group Discussions or Articles I will make sure that I thank you for taking the time (as long as LinkedIn sends me a notification, yes sometimes they miss stuff).

Also, I will reciprocate with a comment, endorsement, or recommendation whenever possible and if I know you well enough.

Number 2 - I Will Provide Value

I am #TheLinkedInGuru (or at least that's what my network tells me). The value that I will provide will be focused on helping my network use LinkedIn effectively.

This may take the form of pointing to LinkedIn Help or to a person who can help, answering questions and/or providing tips on how to use LinkedIn on a regular basis. This is what I do to provide value and I promise I will do it for you as long as folks find it useful.

Number 3 - I Will Not Try to Sell You Anything

I do what I do for free. I do not provide one-on-one training, but I do provide free LinkedIn seminars (in my local community and via Zoom).

I realize that it is a little different, but once people get to know me I hope they understand that I do free LinkedIn seminars because it is my way of trying to make a difference in the community and I get SO MUCH out of doing it that I wouldn't dream of charging for it.

Number 4 - I Will Stay in Touch

You should expect to hear from me because that is what Networkers do! Stay in touch! You should expect me to ask how I or the rest of my network can be of help.

I know the people in my network and I am willing to introduce you to any one of them. I believe that a good networker is a good connector and seeks first to help others. I look forward to being of help.

I like your graphic about "add value, not noise." I think that is a great summary that there is a lot of noise on Linkedin, and a lot of posts that are all about short term conversion. People are really busy this year and have split bandwodth. "Content as connection" does stand out as coming from a place of service.

I have posted the Oscar Wilde quote and feel it’s less arrogant than the Dr Seuss one. We do have to be mindful of what and how we give our opinion, after all each of us has one and you may learn from someone else’s.
