Effective Antioxidant Solutions for the Aquafeed Industry

Effective Antioxidant Solutions for the Aquafeed Industry

Aquafeed production involves various ingredients, including fish meal, vegetable and animal protein meals, fish and vegetable oils, carbohydrate-based binders, and essential vitamin and mineral premixes. Antioxidants play a crucial role in preserving the quality of these feeds, which are typically manufactured using a process called pelleting. This process includes grinding, wet mixing, pellet extrusion, drying, oil coating, and bagging.

Why Aquafeed Needs Stabilization

Ensuring the stability of aquafeed is vital to retain nutritional value and safeguard aquatic health. Key reasons for stabilization include:

  1. Oxidation: Aquafeed is susceptible to oxidation due to air exposure. With a higher oil content, aquafeed lacks the air protection provided by aluminum packaging often used in pet food.
  2. Nutritional Value Retention: Oxidation can lead to the loss of essential nutrients like vitamins, fatty acids, and energy.
  3. Carotenoid Preservation: High-cost carotenoids, such as astaxanthin used in salmon and trout feed, degrade quickly without proper protection.
  4. Oxidative Stress and Health: Poor lipid quality can negatively impact the health and performance of fish and shrimp.
  5. Metal Catalysts: Metals like iron and copper in meals and fats can accelerate oxidation.
  6. Extended Shelf Life: Effective preservation is essential as aquafeed is often stored for extended periods.
  7. Non-Airtight Packaging: Bulk bags typically lack airtight properties, increasing oxidation risk.
  8. Economic Considerations: Stabilization minimizes spoilage, reducing financial loss.

Factors Influencing Lipid Oxidation in Aquafeed

  • Lipid Type and Quality: Fish and vegetable oils, high in EPA and DHA, are particularly prone to oxidation.
  • Mineral Content: Iron, copper, and magnesium contribute to oxidation.
  • Protein Meal Quality: Stabilization of animal protein meals is essential for feed quality.
  • Bulk Oil Quality: Adding antioxidants to bulk oils can maintain their stability.
  • Blood Meal: Blood meal, with high heme iron, can catalyze oxidation.
  • Antioxidant Addition: Adding antioxidants helps minimize lipid oxidation.

Shelf Life Solutions for Aquafeed

1. Synthetic Antioxidants Traditional synthetic antioxidants, including TBHQ, BHA, BHT, ascorbyl palmitate, and propyl gallate, are effective in enhancing oxidative stability in aquafeed.

2. Natural Antioxidants Plant-based antioxidants, such as mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract, serve as natural stabilizers, extending the shelf life of feed with high antioxidant activity.

Types of Antioxidants for Aquafeed:

  • Synthetic Options: BHA, BHT, and combinations with propyl gallate or ascorbyl palmitate offer robust protection, often applied pre-extrusion and in coating oils.
  • Natural Options: Rosemary extract and mixed tocopherols are used in specialty feeds and are also applied pre-extrusion and in coating oils.

Antioxidant Application Strategies:

  1. Raw Materials: Animal Protein Meals: Should be stabilized before receipt, with oxidation parameters and residual antioxidants checked. Oils: Ideally stabilized upon arrival, with antioxidants added to storage tanks.
  2. Aquafeed: Pre-Extrusion: Synthetic antioxidants are applied to protect ingredients during processing. Coating Oil: The majority of antioxidants are added at this stage for effective stabilization.
  3. Premix: Incorporating antioxidants through premixes helps protect the feed during manufacturing.

Simple and thoughtfull. Dietary lipid oxidation is a critical factor, not only affecting diet quality, but also affecting metabolic efficiency. Many feed additives have different effective functions, but it might create a cost load on small investments. I am personality believe that multi-functional feed additives will be the first choice for medium and small investment. Among,Bile acid feed additives improve fat metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, immune function, and control AHPND in shrimps in 6 days.
