Effect of Population Growth on Tech and Economic Outcomes in Developed Nations

Since the eighteenth century, the relationship between population growth and technological and economic change has been debated.?

While some nations deal with the burden of aging populations, others are faced with too many youths and few resources. Yet, despite this gloomy outlook for overall global economic health, some countries are bucking the trend and raising their living standards by improving the quality of life through technology and innovation.

High population growth in developed countries helps economic development since it leads to higher innovation, technological advancements, and increased employment.

Effect of Population Growth in Europe and the U.S.

The last decade has seen significant changes that have affected population, technology, and economic growth. In the U.S., the labor market has been characterized by a large increase in the employment rate, poor wage performance, and low-skill workers. There's also an increase in return to education and a fast expansion of the service sector. The story is different in continental Europe, where we do not see much change in employment rates, substantial change in the return to education, and a slower expansion of the service sector.

It then begs the question, is technology a driving function in economic growth?

Some researchers came up with an IPAT formular to further explain the impact on the population.?

The IPAT Identity

The IPAT identity refers to the notion that environmental impact (I) is the product of population (P), affluence (A), and technology (T). Or in equation form: Impact of an economic system on the environment = Population × Affluence × Technology.?

This formula suggests that population, affluence, and technology determine economic outcomes globally. However, the IPAT model has been criticized on several counts. Firstly, it is not possible to assess the validity of its simplifications and assumptions because the overall function is too complex. Secondly, the population and technology factors are so complex that their exact effects are viewed as almost impossible to determine.?

Technology and Population

In the age of technology and innovation, population growth can increase the potential for economic development.?

Innovation is so much more than a trendy business buzzword. It's a driver of social change, a path to new opportunities, and an engine of economic growth.?

Suppose there is a large enough difference in the population growth rates of two economies, then differences in the speed of technological adoption matter. With sufficiently high population growth rates, economic outcomes will be nearly identical at this point. However, these outcomes differ significantly at some intermediate level of population growth rate. If the cost of data or commuter capital is sufficiently high, this effect will change as rapidly over the period as the higher levels of population growth.

At high levels of population growth, the cost of information or commuter capital and the rate at which these costs change is irrelevant. Differences in growth rates won't translate into differences in economic outcomes because many more people can work on innovations and bring them to scale.?

Population and Economic Development

Population growth and the economic development of popular nations are the most powerful natural forces of our time. As a result, the number of people in the world is increasing. Their physical, intellectual, mental, and social human capital will become increasingly important for understanding the economic and technological changes that will occur in their countries.

With the advent of technology, economic growth has become an increasingly important phenomenon. This might suggest that the demographic transition, which is the focus of this special issue on populations and economic growth, was largely an outcome of economic and technical infrastructure changes.?
